Places to Work

Below is a listing of some great places to work in some regions I’ve visited.

Netherlands

Amsterdam

Netherlands Institute of Holocaust and Genocide Studies

Location

Herengracht 380 | 1016 CJ Amsterdam The Netherlands

Hours

Monday: 1 PM – 5.30 PM | Tuesday-Friday: 9 AM – 5.30 PM

About

Although it sounds a bit heavy, the NIOD offers a great place to work. Access to the library is free after signing up for a library card. The library is extremely quiet and the internet is fast and reliable. There is a large work space with a view of the courtyard in the middle of the reading room.

Switzerland

Geneva

Uni Bastions

Location

Rue De-Candolle 5 1205 Genève

Hours

Monday-Friday 8AM-10PM | Saturday – Sunday 9AM-6PM

About

The University of Geneva has several libraries located in the Bastions building. In particular, the library located on the 2nd floor (1st in European) offers large work areas with ample plugs. Enter through courtyard entrance shown below and walk directly up the stairs. At the top of the stairs, go to your left to enter the reading room.

No library card or check-in is required. Internet access is open to the public. The space is extremely quiet and you’ll often get looks just for packing or unpacking your things. Food and drink are not allowed.

Unimail

Location

Boulevard du Pont-d’Arve 40, 1205 Genève, Switzerland

Hours

Monday-Friday 8AM-10PM | Saturday – Sunday 9AM-6PM

About

Another one of the University of Geneva’s libraries, this library is a bit more lively as the building also houses classes and a cafe. There is a large atrium in the center of the building where students linger and there are often events set up. The library starts on the second floor (1st in European). No library card is required to use the facilities. Internet access is available for guests by registering a phone number and receiving an SMS message with an access code. The internet can be unreliable sometimes but the speed is fine when it’s connected. The library is a bit louder than Bastions which is actually nice sometimes. It’s still a library where people whisper when talking. This library can be busy but there is usually somewhere to sit near a window or one of the large tables spread throughout. Everywhere has a plug.

Interlaken

Youth Hostel

Location

Am Bahnhof Ost Untere Bönigstrasse 3a
3800 Interlaken (BE)

Hours

About

Although this is technically a hostel you can stay at, it also features a full service kitchen and a huge amount of seating. When we were there it was usually quite empty and quiet but I’m sure this isn’t the case in peak season. To get WiFi you need to purchase something. They have beer on tap and some great Thai dishes so it’s a great place to catch up on work over dinner.
